World’s Largest Fake Emerald?
In January the newspapers picked up a fascinating story about the world’s largest emerald having been discovered. It was reported as weighing 57,500 carats (11.5kg) and valued at approximately $1.15 million. The Emerald went to auction in Canada on 28th January but failed to sell. The owner was arrested for multiple fraud charges; although unrelated to the emerald it has added to the controversy surrounding the stone.
The owner Regan Reaney claimed to have recently purchased the gem in India. Having been appraised by a Canadian gemmologist it was concluded that it was in fact most probably a stained Beryl with little commercial value. Mr Reaney is still adamant that the stone is genuine and accepts that it had been colour treated; his argument being that many emeralds undergo some form of colour enhancement and his was no exception.
The problem a gemmologist faces when trying come to a conclusion in this case is that emerald and beryl are both of the same gem species and share many of the same physical and optical characteristics. White or colourless beryl is relatively common and has no real commercial value whilst a genuine emerald is one of the world’s rarest gems in its purest state. As the emerald in question is opaque it is impossible to examine the internal structure for tell tale impurities known as inclusions that can identify the stone. Instead experience, intuition, probability and circumstance are the only tools left for the gemmologist to use.
Whilst India is one of the richest sources in the world for rare gems the Indian gem industry has become increasingly expert in disguising and faking. Often sold for only pennies per carat “emeralds, rubies” and other gems can be obtained in abundance. Sometimes a mixture of glass and real gem material or sometimes heavily treated with colouring oils it is often impossible to detect the difference without recourse to testing equipment or an expert eye.
